Dear Mistress (A Sailor’s Lament)

sailorslament

And what of us, dear mistress
Those you gave a home
Were with you on boiling days
And nights where your tears fell from the sky
Our life, our love
Wore a single name
You
Dear mistress
Each of us
Shared your struggle
Your love
Your triumph and tragedy
The great loss and small gain
We know no better
We know no worse
Yours is ours
Our cross to bow before
Our cross to die upon
Though in death we become one
With you
A consummation of our total devotion
Enveloped in your beauty
As we rest
Yet seldom are we at peace
Be it in your dark embrace
Or in the bellies of your beasts.
