I’d like to take a few lines to brag on my wife Raven and say how wonderful she is. This will be more for her than anyone else, but I hope the rest of you will read along and enjoy this sweet little story.

My birthday was last Tuesday, the 12th. My wife works nights, which means by the time she finished Monday, it was already Tuesday morning. Not by a lot, a couple of hours, but my birthday. I was waiting for her to come home with a mug of hot tea for her as I do every night, but this night was different. She said she needed to stop and find me a card after work, but I didn’t expect her to be gone so long. When she got home, I got a surprise with a bag full of goodies. The stuff she ordered wouldn’t arrive for another day or two, and my wonderful wife wanted me to have a few things on my actual birthday.

Sometimes my wife isn’t the best when it comes to buying me things. A lot of that is my fault though. On this occasion, not only did she do a good job, she did fantastic. Even if she didn’t I’d love her anyway, but I really wasn’t expecting this.

So, she walks in and hands me a bag and a little strawberry cheesecake from the Wal-Mart bakery. For starters, I had two birthday cards. One was from her wishing me a happy birthday, and she picked out a winner. The other was a card from our cats. I know it might seem silly to some people, but we always give each other a card from our cats. They’re a part of our family, our fur babies. I think pet people understand.

What was in the bag? Well, to begin a pack of paper and a pair of my favorite pens. Practical things to give a writer. A gray bandana with skulls in the corners. A bottle of black nail polish. The last two gifts blew me away. They were both unexpected and greatly appreciated.

The first was a coffee mug, white with a black wrap around saying “Love You To the Moon & Back.” The other was the perfect gift for the man who loves to grill. No, not a Weber Kettle grill, but the next best thing. A cookbook, The Ultimate Guide to Grilling. Inside are 466 recipes along with beautiful color pictures and tons of tips and techniques. I can’t wait to try some of these out now that the weather is getting better. I’ll review it sometime soon.

My wife did an awesome job picking a few things out for me. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer, sweeter surprise to start my birthday. Many thanks to my sweet and thoughtful wife.
