Black Sails Season 2 (2015) Review

Well, that’s certainly two different seasons packed into one. Packed into the second season of Black Sails like a cannonball ready to fire. The second season of Black Sails aired on Starz between January 24, 2015, and March 28, 2015, containing 10 episodes. The second verse certainly isn’t the same as the first and certainly isn’t as good overall. Still, the entire season is a middle shelf selection. It starts slow with the first few episodes falling below the middle line and the remainder stay at mid-mast, if not rising above the tide. I wasn’t really into this season until the final few minutes of the fifth episode. The first worth a damn.

Tom Hopper’s Billy Bones is most certainly “the man.” He’s back, and ready for action, and to serve his captain. Who else did I praise in the first season? Luke Arnold’s John Silver is the Black Sails Jon Snow of Game of Thrones, both in character and appearance. The final episode is a true test, and mark on the legendary character and we learn a lot, and see how the man came to be as we know him. Zach McGowan as Charles Vane is again great, villainous, and starting to become somewhat of an “anti-hero.” Toby Stephens’ Flint, well, I’m not thrilled with how his storyline progressed. For 2015, I’m not happy, but today, I’d call it pandering and be less into it. You just have to watch.

The final two episodes make the season, and make a lot of the characters. Not the true villains who’ve exposed themselves for what they are, but our “anti-heroes.” Our pirate “Four Horseman,” if you will. Vane. Flint. Silver. Bones. Man, that final episode. I’m ready to see what comes next. How does all this play out? I wrote that after the end of the first season, and the start of the second proved disappointing. Still, I’m on board. I’ve got my bottle of Kraken, and I’m ready to roll on the waves with the crew.
